The National Assembly has suspended all legislative activities as concerns over the deadly Covid-19 flare up with the first reported case in the country confirmed Tuesday.
The suspension which was agreed by all parties would likely wipe out or prolong assembly’s 2020 legislative sessions from the parliamentary calendar which commenced on Monday.
Announcing the suspension of parliamentary business, Speaker Mariam Jack-Denton said the move is in line with the decision of President Adama Barrow who on Tuesday ordered the suspension of all public gatherings and events as part of efforts to curb the spread of the virus.
According to the Speaker the indefinite suspension would mean lawmakers will now shift focus to their constituency works.
“We are trying to work out other modalities and I am sure the Office of Clerk will inform Honourable Members because there is a need for effective sensitisation in our constituencies,” the Speaker said.
