Dr Amadou Scattred Janneh, a former information minister who was arrested Tuesday, was yesterday arraigned at the Brikama Magistrates Court charged with two counts of criminal trespass and punishment for malicious injury in general.
According to police prosecutor Sgt 3533 Bobo Jarju, the alleged offence happened on 22 March 2018 at Gunjur, when with intent to intimidate or cause annoyance, Janneh allegedly entered into the premises of Golden Lead.
He also accused Dr Janneh of willfully and unlawfully damaging the discharge pipes of the company valued at fifty thousand United States Dollars ($50,000.000).
Dr Janneh pleaded not guilty to the charges.
However, Principal Magistrate Omar Cham granted him bail in the sum of 500,000.00 dalasi with two Gambian sureties who should deposit their ID Cards or Passports to the registrar of the court and swear to an affidavit.
The accused was represented by lawyer Lamin J Darboe.
The case has been adjourned to 17 October for hearing.
Meanwhile Dr Janneh has described his arrest as an inhumane treatment as he was taken in when he was mourning his uncle who passed away.
“Whatever the reasons for my arrest may be, it is very inhumane because I was in mourning and I am still in mourning. They have every opportunity to wait until after the burial to contact me since they have my phone numbers and I travel back and forth to Gunjur almost on daily basis and any officer assigned to get me, would be able to locate me,” Janneh told Eye Africa TV.
He added that he is not particularly angry about his arrest, but the fact that he was picked up at a cemetery where his uncle is being buried is something he cannot understand.
“I was charged with treason and sedition under Jammeh, I did not shake, and I do not think being charged with removal of pipes that were illegally installed would scare me enough to run,” Dr Janneh said.
